PROJECT MEND featured as part of the Express-News' 17th Annual Grace of Giving series
On Saturday, December 2, 2011, Project MEND was featured in the San Antonio Express News as part of their 17th annual Grace of Giving series. The article talks about the impact Project MEND has had on the community through the eyes of one of their client's, Ms. Patricia Sanchez-Lopez. Sanchez-Lopez was in a life-threatening accident in December 2009 that resulted in a spinal cord injury leaving her paralyzed. Without the means to obtain the medical equipment she needed on her own, Sanchez-Lopez was referred to Project MEND by a caseworker at the hospital. For a minimum cost, Project MEND was able to provide all the medical equipment necessary for Sanchez-Lopez' rehabilitation and mobility allowing her the freedom of independence. PROJECT MEND awarded the MOAA Community Service Caregiver Award-Off Post
On October 28, 2011, Project MEND was awarded the Community Service Caregiver Award – Off Post by the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA) at their first annual MOAA Community Heroes Appreciation Awards held at the Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas. The philosophy of the award originated in the spirit of, and with an alignment to, the President and First Lady’s efforts to organize public-private outreach efforts in order to support our military, veterans, wounded warriors and their families, and aligns with MOAA’s involvement with a coalition of organizations that have designed a blueprint for these community partnerships. Thus, the intent of the award was to illuminate and recognize both individuals and groups within military and civilian communities, who exemplify service to the wounded military and veterans’ populations. This year, as the inaugural year of the award, the emphasis was on the recognition of the caregiver. The intent was to demonstrate that there is a continuum of care giving and that there exists a broad spectrum of individuals, both within the military base community and in the
civilian community. Keeping in mind that people may “give care” in unique and diverse ways.

PROJECT MEND awarded a Texas Veterans Commission Grant!
Project MEND was recently awarded a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission to assist veterans and their families with Assitive Technology (AT) services. Veterans and their families will now be able to receive financial assistance for the purchase of specialized or fitted AT devices that their VA benefits and/or other insurance does not cover. Some of these items may include diabetic shoes; toe fillers; orthotics and prosthetic devices; vehicle alterations necessary for mobility; medically necessary recreational devices required for rehabilitation; AT necessary for rehabilitation. To apply for services, call 210-223-6363 (MEND).
"This program is made possible by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for
Veterans' Assistance. The Fund for Veterans' Assistance provides grants to organizations serving veterans and their families."
